Anunnaki, Sumerian Religion & Ancient Aliens (Astronaut) Theory with Joshua Free
PART I
(00:30)
Royce Holleman: Joining me today is going to be Joshua Free, and we’re going to be talking about the “Ancient Alien Theory” and the Anunnaki. He’s written some thirty-or-so books covering different parts of the “Ancient Astronaut” work that he’s done over the years. I told him today, I thought we could talk about the ‘religious’ and ‘spiritual’ aspects of the “Ancient Aliens Theory” and the religions that they brought to us and what we might have learned from them in a spiritual context, if anything. So, here I will introduce Joshua and I thought we’d break the ice by having you tell us about your first interests and how long you’ve been pursuing the “Ancient Astronaut” work.

Joshua Free: Well, I guess the more believable end of that, or for the sake of to-night; I grew up in the 1980′s – I’m almost thirty years old – enamored by a lot of media and culture at that time. I was constantly absorbing, for example, the Dark Crystal, the Labyrinth and all these mystical kinds of elements, and that’s what I remember from childhood.
I was raised Catholic, and so there was a lot of religious indoctrination as well, and spirituality, and that kind of thinking outside of the box. I went to Catholic school, was an altar boy – I actually considered going into the priesthood very seriously. As I was coming of age – about twelve or thirteen years old – a lot of things I was looking at and exploring more deeply was pointing me in other directions and things outside of what I was raised into. And of course, in that kind of a paradigm, its almost taboo or forbidden to ask any questions or look outside from what you’ve been given.
I ended up getting involved with the ‘other side’ of things – I went in the other direction – into the New Age, metaphysics and such. I didn’t feel that I had lost my spirituality but I felt that in our world there was a greater understanding to be had and that there was more than what I was being given.
(04:00)
I was officially involved with the New Age and the occult when I was twelve years old and was originally initiated into a Druid organization. Even in that, I was exposed to a lot more than what I would call a specifically “celtic” paradigm and the ‘mythological’ methodology of looking at life. Essentially more than we are given in the modern Judeo-Christian method of looking at this. More than just Druidism by itself, there was something else underlying this and what all ancient cultures reflect that pointed to something else. All of the ancient traditions were focused on a “Sky God Religion” – if we can call it that. They all adopted this belief that the ‘gods’ were in the “heavens” and the “stars” and they ‘came down’ and entrusted knowledge and civilization to people. And it seems interesting that every culture would have this as their basis and for their religious mysticism. It’s even found in the Judeo-Christian tradition, but its down-played in what we are offered of it or in many cases even removed, which has happened in the last thousands of years.
All of this allowed me to explore this at a more academic and intellectual level, because that’s what I am about. Immediately when I start talking to people, other people, friends of mine, even at a very young age, what I had to say seem to attract a lot of interest and so I started to explore it individually on my own, yet at the same time it often made me an outcast from a lot of the groups and organizations I was involved in at the time; because I was constantly looking for something outside the box. I mean, even with getting out of the box of the framework I was raised to, it seemed I was simply falling into one more enclosure.
It seems the way the order works in this world, its almost designed so that anyone who questions, it seems easy to simply label as ‘crazy’.
(06:20)
Royce: Right.
Joshua: That being the way it is, for some reason ‘your’ the one that has the issue for not seeing it the way everyone else does. So, the “Ancient Aliens Theory”, that is kind of a semantic that has become popular now. It’s not really a ‘new idea’, but in terms of the vocabulary used to describe it – its reflective of whats more popular in our generation that has been raised on Star Wars and this science-fiction methodology. And it’s not to say that its fake, but our newer way of breaking it down allows for our generation to better understand it, just as our ancestors were left to their knowledge of technology and what they knew of mysticism and spirituality in order to understand things.
Its like necessary for our evolution to have a clear understanding of where things came from. The term “Alien” – well, we can apply that to almost any phenomenon depending on what kind of definition you want to apply to that in terms of language. For example, you have the ‘spaceship’ kind of extra-terrestrial that comes from a physical planet or a physical star-system that travels physically and materially in bodies that we can interact with, all in the way that we would normally understand things today.
